A Mouthful of Content and No Time to Chew
A common reservation expressed by some teachers who would like to add active learning models of instruction to their tool kit is the worry that their course simply requires students to encounter too much content to devote significant class time to anything other than airing those ideas one after another, straight out of the instructors' mouth. Fears of burning too much clock rearranging the chairs or coaxing participation out of a tired class at 8am has sometimes prevented instructors from trying new approaches. Attendees at this session will think through the learning implications of high-density content delivery and work together to dream up fresh ways of moving teachers' information into students' heads.

Book Club: 99 Tips for Creating Simple and Sustainable Educational Videos
99 Tips for Creating Simple and Sustainable Educational Videos by Karen Costa

This book covers the whole process of video creation from where to place the video, types of videos that you can create, and how to create them. Her biggest piece of advice is to keep it simple so that you can reuse your videos over many semesters. We will read and discuss, but also help each other create incredible videos this semester.

Culturally Responsive Teaching
Too often when we say that teachers must "meet students where they are" we emphasize what they lack: deficiencies they bring with them to our classrooms. But "where students are" is at least equally about their strengths--life experiences and adult-grade cultural capital that we may not recognize because we haven't been trained to see it as part of "college-readiness." This session will share practical ways to remove such blind spots through "CRT," Culturally Relevant Teaching that acknowledges and empowers students' rich, profound stores of knowledge, capability, and character. I'll propose a new CRT, Culturally Responsive Teaching, that roots course content and delivery in students' abundant readiness.
